Why Leadership?

We need leadership.

There is no greater challenge or need in the 21st Century than the need for effective quality leadership.

The fragile nature of our postmodern-world has set nations on a course with no definition. The future has become an unpredictable mystery. The need for transformational leadership is our generational imperative. We need visionary leadership.

We need competent effective leaders. Globalization, lawlessness, irresponsibility, gross mismanagement, corporate corruption, political confusion, economic meltdown, terrorism and heightened security are some of the words that have become standard description of our fragile world.

The world is searching for leaders who can lead by their lives.

Leaders who can chart the course for us through the dark and treacherous waters of our current context. National governments and international bodies are hard pressed to provide answers and solutions to the conditions and challenges facing our global village. Developed industrial nations are as fragile as developing nations as all world leaders struggle to find their place in the converging tide of globalization. We need transformational leaders.

The recent national protests and the toppling of many once renowned leaders is an indication that the once valued identities and allegiances are being devalued and a demand for a new breed of leadership with sound solutions to our cry is demanded. We need leaders who lead with correct lives. Leaders whose lives speak beyond their deeds and words. Such leaders are not a result of a ballot box, they are made and crafted in the school of discipleship and Life is their curriculum and discipline.

Questions of principles, truth, accountability and morality in corporate business executives have produced a culture of distrust and the need for government regulations resulting in the collapse of mega-conglomerates. We need correct executive leaders in our corporate setting. Leadership determines the course for organisations. Change a leader and an institution is changed. We constantly become like our leaders.

The cry for leadership is everywhere. The world needs leaders who are integrated. One in life, deeds and words.

The world has seen much of a cheating culture of leadership, and pseudo leaders who say one thing and do the opposite. We need leaders that can lead. The tragedy of the colonial dispensation is the production of mass reactional leaders. They rose into power to manage a crisis. The colonial era has failed to produce trained, competent, confident, skillful and quality leaders. This is true in most developing nations. For many of us in these emerging nations, the achievement of national independence has further exposed this deficit in authentic leadership. Much of the leadership in our developing nations is a product of circumstances rather than the results of age long investment in formal, intentional training. We need compassionate instructional teaching leadership.

The recent disgrace of the fall our many renowned religious leaders further compromise the stand of the church as the centre for global change. However, the sad state we find ourselves in, Christ has left the destiny of the nations and their development in the hands of men and women he personally laboured and trained. The church is the only arm that has a single responsibility of producing this desired leadership. We need to respond to this mandate.

Jesus Christ is a heaven’s response to this need and he is committed to the highest standards of personal consecrations and integrity in leadership development. Christ is positioned to provide the desired leadership our nations are calling. He is uniquely poised to challenge us to discover him and make a focus leap into the future with definite results. He is prepared and tested to lead the strategic change of the student development due to his identification with us the tertiary students The university is demanding what Jesus is by life. As the students, we are demanding what only Christ is mandated to produce authentic leaders through discipleship. Why Inter-Society? Capturing the catalysis spirit in establishing the first Intersociety in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. We are in a new day as we enter the 21st Century with its promises and perplexes, a generational change of leadership is emerging and transforming our fragile world.

There is a fresh wind of new leadership spirit everywhere. Today’s leaders are drawn to each due to common vision, purpose and passion. Many are discovering their mutual oneness and concerns for our postmodern world. Many are expressing a desire for relationship, friendship and support system with leaders of like mind. Over the years this desire has been institutionalized as a number of leadership fellowships and networks have been formed. These institutions provide moral support and fellowship among leadership. Networking is now a reality.

The 21st century has thrust the world into a spiral of hope and renewed motivation. Advances in the ongoing development of mankind are redefining the fields of science, communication, entertainment, politics and business. The youth of our world has become an inevitable prime target for consumption and adopting all these changes. However, all these laudable changes have left people undone and unformed. People are experiencing times of anxiety, fear, frustrations and lack of direction. The regions of our lives are still bound on the north by the lack of clear thinking, east by myopic vision, south by indecisions and west by a lack of purpose.

The cry for correct leadership is everywhere. Our homes, communities, schools, the church, the government and business are in desperate need for sound life leaders. Several institutions are hard pressed to provide answers and solutions to the plight and challenges facing our world. Questions of moral and ethical leadership are producing a culture of distrust among front line leaders. The future is upon us.

The joint fellowship came into existence in such finest hour as new leadership is needed at this juncture. Yesterday paradigms are being destroyed and this VCA is uniquely positioned to challenge leaders to discover new paradigms and develop new skills to chart the course for the University Society Leaders. However, this newness of external tools for shaping our lives must come from the newness of life that is embodied in Christ, for in Him is life and the life is the light of men. Christian Society leaders will be challenged to pattern their leadership after the life of Christ.

VCA major goal is to look unto Jesus for our own transformation and authenticity. We received a clear mandate and assignment from the Lord as witnessed by the consultation we had with some of the society leaders. VCA major goal is to create and provide an environment, atmosphere and climate that is conducive to the development and release of the gifts of emerging student leaders. The key concern of VCA is to see student’s leaders under authority for mentoring, mutual accountability, effective management and efficient administration of their resources to maximize their personal and corporate outreach effort.

The strategic focus of VCA is to encourage and provide forums of unity among student leadership authorities who pursue a common purpose and commitment to growing tomorrow’s leaders. VCA desires the corporate servant leadership towards and among student Christian leaders as perfectly demonstrated by the diverse backgrounds and experiences. VCA honours unity among diverse interdenominational, international and independent leaders; and embraces it without uniformity. Through the centuries, the history of human development has shown the inherent need for corporate effective leadership. The kingdom of God is uniquely positioned to influence the development of nations.
